The monthly Leading Indicator of Industry Profitability is constructed from high frequency data series. The indicators are designed to be predictive of movements in corporate profitability six months hence. An industry leading index is created for the economy as a whole, as well as for 49 individual sectors within the economy, thus providing coverage for most of the private business activity that takes place in Canada.

Document Highlights

  • Although the Leading Indicator of Industry Profitability held steady in October, the Index is still 2.3 points higher than at this time in 2017.
  • Of the 49 industries tracked in the Index, 33 registered an increase this month. Thirteen of the 17 service industries tracked showed positive outlooks, as did 12 of the 17 manufacturing industries. The outlook for primary industries and trade was more neutral.
  • High capacity utilization rates, softer economic growth, and the prospect of higher interest rates are all weighing on the near-term outlook for profitability.
