Palliative Care Matters was launched in June 2016 as an initiative championed by Covenant Health's Palliative Institute, in partnership with 13 national health organizations. Building on a legacy of reports and recommendations on improving palliative care, and the slow pace of action, these organizations have called for shared, pan-Canadian leadership to ensure all Canadians with life-limiting illness have timely access to high quality, coordinated and integrated palliative care.
The initiative is based on a three-phase approach: Talk—Understand—Do to foster a conversation between the public, researchers, and health system leaders on palliative care in Canada. Through an innovative consensus development model, a Lay Panel of 12 Canadians prepared a Consensus statement and recommendations.
Our report, Palliative Care Matters: Fostering Change in Canadian Health Care, synthesizes the key themes and aspirations of the recommendations, provides insights on the mechanisms and strategies that could be adopted to realize those aspirations, and identifies potential next steps as initiative takes its next steps in the coming months.
In this webinar, Konrad Fassbender from Covenant Health will provide an overview of the Palliative Care Matters initiative, including the context and unique approach used, and the Consensus Statement of the Lay Panel. Report author, Carole Stonebridge, will share the findings from the Conference Board's analysis, including insights on next steps in moving from the Lay Panel aspirations and recommendations to feasible, actionable policies.
