The monthly Leading Indicator of Industry Profitability is constructed from high frequency data series. The indicators are designed to be predictive of movements in corporate profitability six months hence. An industry leading index is created for the economy as a whole, as well as for 49 individual sectors within the economy, thus providing coverage for most of the private business activity that takes place in Canada.

Document Highlights

  • The Conference Board of Canada’s Leading Indicator of Industry Profitability rose 0.4 points in June, marking its 10th consecutive monthly increase.
  • Of the 49 industries included in the index, 30 improved in June. In manufacturing, 11 out of 17 industries showed positive outlooks (up from 10 in May), while in services 10 out of 17 industries recorded positive outlooks last month (down from 15 in May).
  • Rising plant and equipment investment to ease elevated capacity utilization rates in the Canadian economy will weigh on industry profitability in the near term.
