Bird Construction: Safety Drives Performance
To make the business case for workplace health and safety, organizations focus on prevention and work to embed safety into all aspects of the construction process. At Bird Construction, they call this “Safe Production,” and it means putting a safety lens on all aspects of the production cycle. Rather than just focusing on the traditional lagging indicators of organizational performance, such as lost time and modified work requirements, Bird also analyzes leading indicators—“near miss” reports, orientations, and training. Employers are only beginning to recognize the business case for managing health and safety as clearly as other business risks. The future of health and safety leadership lies in demonstrating that quality safety is a driver of quality work and “safety management is just good management.”

This issue looks at the challenges faced by Morguard, a real estate and property management company, in creating a healthy and safe work environment for its employees, as well as ensuring the health and safety of its tenants, contractors, and everyone else who uses or passes through its buildings. In the briefing, Suman Bhasker, National Manager for Occupational Health, Safety, and Security at Morguard, explains how they combined transparency and creativity to create a culture of safety.

A Focus on the Health Aspect of Safety at the County of Wellington
The County of Wellington’s health and safety culture, which embraces individual responsibilities, is key to its success. Like many municipalities, the County oversees a range of lines of business, which present various health and safety needs and issues, including psychological wellness. The County has well-established core principles, against which it can assess and integrate new legislation. These principles also allow it the ability to evaluate new trends to determine their overall benefit to health and safety. An indicator of the success of the County’s program has been its ability to integrate employee health into its safety culture.

This briefing, Health and Safety—Views from the Top: Mining With a Mission at PotashCorp, presents the views of Mark Fracchia, Vice-President for Safety, Health and Environment at PotashCorp. “We don’t talk about safety as ‘job number one’ or ‘priority number one,’ because priorities change but values don’t,” says Fracchia. According to Fracchia, over the coming years, PotashCorp will continue with its strategic plan to become one of the safest mining companies in the world. While developing its five-year safety plan, the company diagnosed gaps and opportunities related to workplace health and safety. “It’s important that any initiatives are properly communicated to everyone, and to consider input and feedback from front-line employees,” says Fracchia.

Health and Safety—Views From the Top: A Spectrum of Safety at Niagara Casinos
This issue delves into the unique health and safety risks at Niagara Casinos. It presents some of the creative and successful measures the organization has taken to reduce those risks. In the briefing, Maria Graham—Niagara Casinos’ Vice-President of Human Resources—discusses the challenges that she and her organization face, and she describes a number of initiatives and approaches that have been developed to reduce workplace injuries. Some of the initiatives have been highly successful: for example, repetitive strain injuries have declined by 50 per cent over a five-year period.

Sandra Oldfield, President and CEO of Tinhorn Creek, explains how the health and safety program was developed and how it has become an integral part of every employee’s and contractor's daily routine. Major contributors to the program’s success are supportive senior management, a culture of reporting all incidents, annual hazard assessments, and an active and engaged health and safety committee.

Health and Safety—Views From the Top: An Interview With Robert Bennett
This issue focuses on the health and safety practices at Nova Scotia Power Inc. Rob Bennett, President and CEO, discusses the utility’s health and safety programs. The programs revolve around four guiding principles: involvement, mutual trust and respect, communication, and recognition for those who take the initiative and help to make the overall working environment as safe as possible. Although Bennett credits company-wide employee involvement as the main driver behind the success of the utility’s health and safety programs, he maintains that their trust will always remain a work in progress.

Health and safety prevention continues to be top of mind in the temporary staffing market. While a great deal has been accomplished to benefit agencies, clients, and temporary staffers alike, hurdles remain. This issue focuses on the work undertaken by Stephen Jones in his roles as both President of The People Bank—the recipient of several awards for volunteerism and contributions to the industry—and as President of the Association of Canadian Search, Employment and Staffing Services to enhance his agency’s existing health and safety initiatives, as well as advocate for the entire temporary employment and staffing industry.

Ontario Safety Association for Community and Healthcare
OSACH has developed the blueprint for the CSA Z1000 standard and is piloting this model in partnership with HealthForceOntario. This model is the first of its kind in Canada, designed specifically for healthcare, and combines worker, patient, and public safety.

Focus on Hubbell Canada
Their safety performance has improved year over year with 25 lost time accidents in 2006, 13 in 2007 and year-to-date 2008, 4. Medical aid has decreased from 12 in 2006 to 5 year-to-date. These figures are not acceptable, however they are trending in the right direction and they are working diligently at improving these results.
