Council Manager and Research Associate, Diversity and Inclusion Research

The Council Manager / Research Associate is a key contributor to the diversity and inclusion (D&I) research practice area – specifically focused on program development and advisory services in the area of diversity and inclusion practices. This position plays a critical role in helping to build, develop and deliver the program plan for the Council on Inclusive Work Environments—a network of diversity and inclusion professionals in Canada. The role also supports other programs and research initiatives.

Reporting to the Director, the successful candidate will be part of a professional team dedicated to enhancing and delivering a wide variety of networking and research services to customers on current and emerging topics on diversity and inclusion, and general human resources issues. To be considered for this role you must have thorough knowledge and understanding of human resource management practices including diversity and inclusion policies in Canada. To be successful in this role, you must demonstrate creativity, foresight and mature judgment in independently anticipating and solving problems. Solid research, writing, meeting facilitation, business development and customer relationship management skills are essential.

This position is a permanent full-time position, located in Ottawa and available immediately.

Principal Duties

The successful candidate will have the ability to think strategically and respond quickly to multiple priorities and deadlines. The primary role is as Council Manager, where you will draw on your knowledge in the field of D&I and utilize your experience in adult learning to develop an annual meetings program for the Council on Inclusive Work Environments (a network comprised of senior diversity and inclusion managers and executives) and build the membership base of the council.  You have an entrepreneurial flare and enjoy business development. 

Because you work closely with practitioners you will be expected to help conceptualize strategic research issues, support major research projects utilizing your understanding of HR and D & I practice and utilize your flair for writing and ability to produce high quality written work.  Specifically you will:

  • Develop leading edge programming for the Council on Inclusive Work Environments and build the membership base. This includes the design and management of meetings programs that focus on top issues that meet member expectations, responding to member information requests, identifying topics for and hosting webinars.
  • Develop and execute a membership growth and retention strategy. Business development is a critical and fundamental aspect of the role.
  • Support the development of a large annual national conference.
  • The ability to support research projects of varying complexity utilizing your knowledge of qualitative research methods is an asset, but secondary to the primary responsibilities related to the Council.
  • Produce high quality, well written reports, executive summaries, articles, and proposals.
  • Communicate effectively with customers, team members, colleagues, research advisors and external stakeholders.
  • Deliver excellence in product and customer service.
  • Participate in internal and external meetings.
  • Work closely with the Director and other research staff to ensure timely delivery of products and services and to conceptualize new research opportunities and projects.
  • Work with the Director to prepare research proposals and secure funding.

Skills & Qualifications

  • A masters degree in business, the humanities, sociology or related discipline (or equivalent experience), along with demonstrated knowledge of diversity and inclusion and human resource management issues.
  • A minimum of four years’ experience in a professional applied research or business environment or as a practitioner, with experience handling complex projects from inception to completion.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of meeting design, facilitation, adult learning principles and experience developing a variety of meeting formats is a definite asset.
  • Demonstrated business development, fundraising and sales skills, customer relationship management techniques and results.
  • Advanced writing skills with the ability to write clearly, concisely and quickly; the ability develop and publish research will be an asset.
  • Demonstrated understanding of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies is a definite asset.
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications.
  • Ability to set priorities, work under pressure, deliver high quality results and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated success in handling multiple responsibilities.
  • A strong sense of teamwork, professionalism and customer focus.
  • Ability to travel in Canada is required.
  • Bilingualism is a definite asset.
