Missing in Action

The average Canadian worker was off the job for almost two full work weeks in 2011. These absences ranged from time off for minor illnesses to longer-term leaves of absence, and cost the Canadian economy an estimated $16.6 billion in 2012. Despite the cost of absenteeism, our study found that fewer than half of Canadian organizations currently track employee absences.

Sustainability of Canada’s Health Care System

Health care now accounts for more than 40 per cent of provincial expenditures. According to the Canadian Institute for Health Information, health spending in 2011 was more than $200 billion. On October 30 and 31, the Conference Board’s Canadian Alliance for Sustainable Health Care will be holding its 3rd Wellness and Sustainable Health Summit to explore solutions to Canada’s greatest health challenges. André Picard, public health reporter for The Globe and Mail and the chair of the Summit, started the conversation with a live Twitter chat on September 10.

Canada’s North Summit 2013

Our Centre for the North will be hosting its second Northern Summit in Whitehorse on October 15–17 to explore the region’s major challenges and opportunities. This year, we’ll feature success stories from communities, businesses, governments, and other organizations across the North. CBoC Highlights

Michael Bloom, Vice-President of Organizational Effectiveness and Learning at The Conference Board of Canada, participated in a live video chat with Globe and Mail editor Christina Varga and Douglas Williamson, CEO of The Beacon Group. The focus of the September 12 chat was on how Canada could become a more innovative and technological powerhouse.

On September 26, Satyamoorthy Kabilan, the Conference Board’s Director of National Security and Strategic Foresight, was interviewed on CTV News Channel on the reasons why Canadians get involved in overseas conflict.
