The monthly Metropolitan Housing Starts publication provides the recent trends in housing starts for 29 metropolitan areas and expectations for starts over both the short and long term.

Document Highlights

  • There are five CMAs with positive short- and longterm expectations, one more than last month. Much of the GTA  remains strong, except for Hamilton, which has negative short- and long-term expectations.
  • The CMAs with the biggest year-over-year declines in housing starts in December were Saskatoon, Hamilton, St. John’s, Saint John, and Ottawa– Gatineau.
  • Abbotsford–Mission had the biggest year-over-year increase in housing starts last month.
