Delivering high-quality, effective, and sustainable health services is both a top priority and one of the most pressing challenges facing Canada today. But in a system that’s already stretched for resources, extra funding for new initiatives or staff can be a long and daunting process. Is there a middle ground? Physician assistants (PAs) are academically prepared and highly skilled health care professionals who provide a broad range of medical services in different clinical settings. Under the supervision of a physician, PA’s provide needed support and care when other medical staff could be stretched to their limit. However, despite their invaluable role, there is a lack of data on the impact of PAs from a productivity and cost-effectiveness perspective. Webinar Highlights Join us for this important webinar, the first in a series, which aims to set the stage to better understand the role of PAs within our health care system. This session will comprise a literature review as well as brief Canadian-based case studies of PA models of care. Dr. Gabriela Prada will introduce PAs; discuss their role in various health care settings; and synthesize relevant information about the effectiveness and efficiency of PAs in Canada and elsewhere. The research report is funded by the Canadian Association of Physician Assistants, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, The College of Family Physicians of Canada, and Alberta Health Services. She provides leadership and oversight to all contract research and executive network activities and often speaks on behalf of the Conference Board on health-related topics. Dr. Prada has a strong understanding of the health industry, including the business processes and activities involved in the provision and management of health services. Having worked as a physician in various settings, including emergency rooms and rural hospitals, she understands the processes involved in the delivery of health care and the interdependence among health-care providers.
