The Cost of a Cleaner Future

As part of its commitment to the Paris Agreement, Canada’s federal government announced several initiatives aimed at reducing emissions, including a mandatory floor for carbon pricing in all provinces and the elimination of coal-fired electrical power generation plants by 2030. However, simply pricing carbon and moving away from fossil fuels are insufficient measures. Even if carbon taxes were to reach $200 per tonne by 2025, this would only result in a 1.5 per cent reduction in GHG emissions outside of the power-generation sector. Trillions of dollars in investment spending on clean-energy infrastructure and significant changes to the way Canadians consume energy will be needed to achieve the country’s goals.

Canada’s Economic Outlook

Canada’s economy continues to perform well above potential and is on track to outperform most other developed economies by a sizable margin, with 3.1 per cent GDP growth forecast for 2017. Strong consumer spending is fueling much of Canada’s stellar growth this year. The labour market has been hot in Canada, with employment surging out of the gate in 2017 and continuing its strong performance into August. Despite ongoing strength in the economy, however, the recent pace of expansion is not expected to last. Economic growth is projected to slow over the second half of this year and into 2018.

The Business Case for Supplier Diversity in Canada

Diverse supply chains can help companies reduce costs, enhance innovation, and develop new markets. Unfortunately, their benefits are not widely known in Canada and, despite those benefits, not enough Canadian businesses and government organizations are adopting supplier-diversity practices. Many women- or minority-owned businesses experience difficulty gaining access to their supply chains. A greater commitment to supplier-diversity programs by all levels of government and changes to procurement practices could help level the playing field and allow diverse businesses to compete with other established suppliers.

Welcoming More Immigrants to Atlantic Canada

Atlantic Canada has the oldest population in the country, and the region’s workforce is expected to decline sharply between now and 2035. This could weaken economic growth, make it difficult for provincial governments to fund social services, and lead to the decline of rural communities and a weaker voice for the region at the federal level. Successfully attracting and retaining more immigrants to Atlantic Canada will advance the region’s population growth and economic outlook.

Funding Models for Physician Assistants

With demand for physician services growing at twice the pace of population growth, considerable strain is being placed on Canada’s health care system and funding resources. Although largely an area of untapped potential in most provinces, physician assistants can help alleviate that increase in demand, decrease wait times, and offset some of the health workforce shortages. But before that can happen, Canada needs to explore sustainable funding sources for physician assistants to better support their integration into the health care system.

Renewable Fuel Standards in Canada

Road transportation is the single largest source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Canada. Lowering the carbon footprint of the fuels we use will play an essential role in reducing those emissions. The government’s existing ethanol-blend mandate has already played a key role in reducing the carbon intensity in gasoline by ensuring that it includes a low-carbon component. In 2013, ethanol blending reduced Canada’s gasoline-related GHG emissions by an estimated 2.1 megatonnes. Maintaining renewable fuel standards can be an integral part of Canada’s transition to a low-carbon future.
