Michael Bassett is the Director, Governance, Compliance, Risk and Sustainability at The Conference Board of Canada where he oversees the Conference Board's research and major events in these areas.
Michael has contributed to numerous custom and public research projects in the areas of governance, ethics, risk management and Crown corporations. He has chaired the Conference Board's and the National Corporate Ethics and Integrity Summit (2018) and National ERM Conference (2017). In summer 2018, he was a plenary speaker at the United Nations HeforShe Congress in Kyiv, Ukraine.
For the past 9 years, Michael has led the research and analysis of the Canadian Board Diversity Council's Annual Report Card—a review of the gender diversity of the boards of Canada's largest 500 companies. The 2017 report card found that the rate of progress of gender diversity on Canada's largest companies has fallen back to its glacial historic rate of change, prompting consideration that more than the comply or explain legislation is required to spur greater diversity in Canadian Boardrooms.
In addition to this role, Michael is the Director of the Centre for Family Enterprises in Canada, a major multi-year initiative to raise awareness of the role and contributions of family-owned businesses to Canada's economy and society. Michael received his Family Enterprise Advisor (FEA) designation in May 2018.
