Ottawa, March 22, 2018—Dr. Susan Black has been selected as the President and Chief Executive Officer of The Conference Board of Canada. She is a seasoned business executive who enables organizations to outperform by implementing best-in-class practices. Dr. Black will begin leading Canada's largest applied-research organization on May 1, 2018.
Dr. Black has held numerous executive positions including Chief Human Resources Officer with Intact Financial Corporation, and Senior Vice-President, People with Holt, Renfrew & Co., Limited. Dr. Black also founded and served as President of Catalyst Canada, a research and advisory non-profit organization that champions opportunities for women in business.
Dr. Black has served on the boards of York University, the Metro Toronto Housing Authority, and North York General Hospital. She currently sits on the board of Gore Mutual Insurance Company, a leading property and casualty insurance company.
“The Board of Directors is very excited about the appointment of Dr. Susan Black,” said Bill McFarland, Canadian Chief Executive Officer and Senior Partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP and Chair of the Board of Directors and selection committee. “With the rapid changes and disruption happening in business, government, and our economy, Susan will champion the work of the Conference Board and lead its transformation to meet the changing needs of customers, businesses, and Canadians.”
Dr. Black will become the seventh President and CEO of The Conference Board of Canada. She succeeds Dr. Daniel Muzyka, who will retire at the end of April after six years as President and CEO. “The Board also wants to thank Dr. Daniel Muzyka for his contributions,” said McFarland.
“The need for objective, independent, evidence-based information to make informed choices has never been greater. The Conference Board of Canada already enjoys a strong reputation through its research, conferences, and networks. I am delighted to have the opportunity to build on its success and contribute to the dialogue on the important issues facing Canada,” said Dr. Black.
Susan is a graduate of Yale University (BA), is a Harvard MBA and, in her life-long quest to better understand human behaviour, obtained a Ph.D. in organizational studies from York University.
