Membership Details
What are the primary activities of the Council? Council members meet twice a year for a day and a half, usually in spring and fall. The members meet together as a large group as well as participate in study groups. Meetings are held in major cities across Canada--typically in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and Calgary. Webinars are regularly scheduled in between meetings dates. What industries are represented on the council? We have a diverse membership consisting of utilities, financial institutions, telecommunications, manufacturing, health care, mining, not for profit, Crown corporations, government and more. How are agendas prepared? The agendas for the meetings are driven by the general membership with guidance from the advisory committee of which there are seven ERM leaders. Our chair is John Fraser, Vice President and Chief Risk Officer of Hydro One.
Interests and needs vary according to member objectives, the economy, regulations and market cycles. We prepare agendas to be reflective of this.
Benefits, Key Features and Activities….
Candid, Off-the-record Discussions Meetings are behind closed doors, permitting off the record, in depth discussions that include presentations, case study analyses, workshops and roundtables. Study Groups Simultaneous study groups, consisting of five to six executives from the SRC, take place the day before the general meeting. The purpose of these groups is to engage in enriched discussions, over a two to four hour period, about one another’s ERM efforts and processes. Benchmarking Service The council provides a benchmarking service, where a member can request a flash survey of the membership on any pressing issues and challenges. The raw data is collected and entered onto a spreadsheet for distribution. These are available on the SRC members only website. Research The council collaborates with academia and other research partners to participate in cutting edge research projects that meet members’ needs. A number of these reports are available to the membership. For 2010/2011, the SRC has a collaborative and ambitious research plan. Three projects are expected to be completed by October 2010. These include: - Black Swans and ERM;
- Risk Governance and Accountabilities; and
- Demonstrating ERM Value and Managing Corporate Reputation.
Risk Watch: Thought Leadership on Risk and Governance A new offering in 2010 and in conjunction with the Directors College of The Conference Board of Canada, the SRC will receive a subscription to a tri-annual perspectives briefing, featuring short, original articles from authors (academia, risk practitioners, risk experts, Directors of Boards) willing to share their thoughts, issues and opinions on risk management and governance. SRC-Wiley Bookstore Webpage All SRC members are able to purchase books and resources at a 30 per cent discount from the SRC-Wiley Bookstore Webpage. A special discount code is provided to new members at time of membership. For a preview of the webpage, go to this website. Strategic Alliances In addition to our own efforts in producing research, we have developed strategic alliances with academia to help evolve ERM within organizations. Information Portal Throughout the year, members regularly receive email transmissions of suggested reading material on ERM and links to articles, external research and more. Accreditation Participation in this network can count toward professional development requirements for association accreditation. Webinars Webinars are scheduled monthly from September 2009 until May 2010. Topics will be timely and relevant. Access to the recordings is on the members’ only site of the SRC webpage. Member Profile A member profile handbook is updated annually. Each member organization and representative on the SRC is featured. The handbook includes facts, challenges, initiatives, accomplishments, trends and perspectives on ERM. It is available to the members by October of each fiscal year. The annual membership fee is $4,325, starting June 1, 2010 to May 31, 2011. For more information or to join the council, please contact us.
