About the CCMTS
The Canadian mining industry is global and its suppliers have benefitted somewhat from that international reach. However, these suppliers are not capitalizing as much as they could from that global market presence. Mining technology research and development is taking place in Canada to improve the efficiency of mining activities and the sector’s environmental stewardship challenges. Such innovations are not reaching their full potential in terms of commercialization at home as well as internationally. The Centre for the Commercialization of Mining Technologies & Services (CCMTS) is being created to respond to an identified industry need to focus on these commercialization and market channel issues, and to strengthen complementarities by working across barriers and silos to promote industry sector cooperation, especially in commercializing technologies and technology-based services.
How the CCMTS complements the activities of CMIC
The Canadian Mining Innovation Council (CMIC) aims to be a council of industry, academic and government participants for which the overarching objectives are: - Increase mining research, innovation and commercialization efforts in order to strengthen Canada’s pre-eminent role as a global leader in mineral exploration, mining and knowledge-based services; and,
- Increase the supply of highly qualified graduates from mining and earth science faculties to meet the significant demand today and into the future of industry, governments and academia.
The Conference Board of Canada builds leadership capacity for a better Canada by creating and sharing insights on economic trends, public policy and organizational performance. It is the foremost, independent, not-for-profit applied research organization in Canada. It is objective and non-partisan and funded exclusively through the fees charged for services to the private and public sectors. It is expert in running conferences but also at conducting, publishing, and disseminating research; helping people network; developing individual leadership skills; and building organizational capacity. As part of a larger program to study commercialization in Canada that covers many sectors, the Conference Board formed the Centre for the Commercialization of Mining Technologies and Services (CCMTS) which focuses on commercialization and market channel issues for the supply side of Canada’s mining sector. The CCMTS is neither bricks and mortar nor a permanent staff. Instead, through workshops and reports, it intends to provide member-driven outputs such as business intelligence, commercialization tools and market strategies that will help Canadian mining technology and service providers to be more successful in both domestic and international markets, and to enhance their competitiveness. The CCMTS does not intend to be involved with ideation or research and development as is the current main thrust of the CMIC. Also, it will produce information and reports, rather than function as an implementing body. Currently the CMIC is focusing mainly on its formation, innovation and human resource needs. As CMIC moves to implement its mandate in commercialization, the research already done by CCMTS will serve CMIC well. In summary, the CCMTS does not duplicate services and activities of other initiatives in the Mining sector. In particular, it will concentrate on business strategy and market channel issues – not ideation and research and development.
