Senior Research Associate, Environment and Energy Policy Research

The Conference Board’s, Energy, Environment and Transportation Policy group is seeking a Senior Research Associate to join its team. The successful candidate will be a skilled researcher and communicator who has a deep understanding of economic and public policy issues related to climate policies, other environmental policies, and energy projects and policies, including both renewable and non-renewable energy.

Reporting to the Director, the Senior Research Associate will bring exceptional writing skills, intellectual curiosity and passion and commitment to a culture that values high quality, creativity and thought leadership. The successful candidate will be part of a professional research team and will undertake integrated, non-partisan, applied research for public policy and private sector decision-makers. This position plays a critical role in helping to build and expand the profile of the research portfolio.

This is a permanent full-time position located in our Calgary office (although our Ottawa office is also a possibility) and is available immediately.

Characteristics

The successful candidate will have the ability to think strategically and respond quickly to multiple priorities and deadlines. As a Senior Researcher, you will be expected to conceptualize strategic research issues, manage and conduct major research projects utilizing your experience with qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, and produce high quality written work. Advanced written communication skills and strong project management skills in addition to a strong customer service orientation and an inquisitive mind are essential. The business development responsibility includes contributing to securing funding for research projects.

Principal Duties

  • Produce high quality, well written research reports, executive summaries, articles, and proposals.
  • Undertake research projects of varying complexity on issues, policy options and implications related to transportation and infrastructure.
  • Conduct research applying appropriate qualitative and/or quantitative research methodologies.
  • Analyze and quickly translate complex research results into key messages for senior executives and decision makers; write high quality reports and media-friendly articles.
  • Manage projects to ensure deliverables are on-time, within budget and meet client expectations.
  • Speak intelligently, providing insights to customers through presentations at conferences and business meetings.
  • Deliver excellence in product and customer service.
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders and customers at all levels.
  • Conceptualize new research opportunities and projects.
  • Quickly familiarize yourself with Conference Board research in immediate and related knowledge areas.

Skills & Qualifications

  • A Masters degree in economics, or a related discipline.
  • Substantial experience and in-depth knowledge of economic or public policy research on a broad range of energy and environment themes.
  • 6+ years of experience in a professional research environment with responsibility for handling complex projects from inception to completion.
  • Demonstrated understanding of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies including: literature reviews, interviews, case studies, surveys, and quantitative data analysis.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Ability to write clearly, concisely and quickly; published work would be an asset.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
  • Ability to communicate research findings to all levels of internal and external stakeholders and audiences.
  • Proficiency in the use of computers in an MS Office environment.
  • Ability to travel in Canada.
  • Bilingualism would be an asset.
