Vice President, Leadership & Human Resources Research
Overview
The Vice President of Leadership & Human Resources Research is a key member of the Executive Team of The Conference Board of Canada. This Executive performs a critical and strategic role for the organization through effective leadership and innovation in the areas of compensation and industrial relations, human resources management research, diversity, and organizational learning and development.
Reporting to the President & Chief Executive Officer, the Vice President is responsible for establishing and implementing an annual department plan which generates in excess of $3 million in annual revenue for the Board. Based in Ottawa, with a small group of direct reports and an overall professional team of 20 people, the role provides an excellent opportunity for an entrepreneur to grow this very successful and mature business to new heights.
Principal Duties
The Vice President of Leadership & Human Resources Research at the Conference Board will interface as a nexus between private and public leaders in Canada. The Vice President will advance thinking on talent management and reflect insight on human resources challenges, and solutions, for a better Canada through research and networks.
The Vice President has leadership responsibility and accountability for:
1. The overall relevance and impact of the leadership and talent management research division of the Board consistent with the needs and opportunities generated by the environment and events in Canada and the world. Key responsibilities include:
- The quality and effectiveness of the core research program including oversight for products such as the: Compensation Outlook; Industrial Relations Outlook; HR Trends & Metrics; and, Employee Benefits Survey.
- Oversee and develop the knowledge area’s research and executive networks.
- Active leadership of and participation in the development of special projects, studies and assignments on behalf of clients for the purpose of generating revenue
and expanding the professional capacity and reach of the leadership and talent management research team;
- Anticipating market and client opportunities and, thereby, updating existing or developing new products and services.
- External presentations relating to the research/outlooks, leadership and talent trends, etc.
2. Overall executive contribution:
- As a member of the executive team of the Board with responsibility to contribute actively to the overall management and strategy of the enterprise, participate in decision making and support all strategic initiatives and decisions of the organization.
- Effective leadership and development of the leadership and talent management research team at the Board.
- Management of the overall departmental business plan and strategy, consisting of products and services which provide $3 million dollars in revenue for the Board.
Qualifications and Qualities
- Education to the Masters or PhD level in business or a related field
- Able to be a strong, independent and objective voice on the future of leadership and talent management issues in Canada
- Innovative and entrepreneurial in anticipating and meeting the needs of the country’s leaders for advice and perspective
- Appetite for and proven success in the important business aspects of the role – generating profitable operating results for the Board and attracting funding to important projects and programs
- Displays a strong appreciation for the importance and appropriate application of human resources analysis in the development of public policy
- Strong knowledge of human capital issues and brings global perspective
- Effective, articulate communicator with an appetite for external outreach, relationship-building and profile development on behalf of the Board – the ability to communicate effectively in both official languages is a key asset
- High degree of professional credibility in the field of leadership and talent management
- Enhance the Board’s reputation and profile by speaking with authority and credibility on Human Resources issues at national conferences, seminars, roundtables and through media interviews.
- Talented and insightful in the development and application of research approaches
- Able to attract, inspire and challenge a top professional team
- Displays good judgement and personal maturity
- Resourceful, aspiring, passionate, curious, positive, open
- Ability to travel
- Bilingualism is a definite asset
