An effective ethics and compliance program plays an important role in the success of any organization. Corporate boards have a significant responsibility to oversee and monitor a company’s compliance program. In many cases, corporate boards find themselves behind when fulfilling their corporate compliance oversight responsibilities. Chief Compliance Officers (CCOs) face an ongoing challenge to educate and train board members on how to monitor the company’s compliance program and the commitment of corporate leaders to the program.

In the best-case scenario, the board and CEO fully understand the importance of ethics and compliance and champion the efforts needed to implement a successful program. But all too often, their support may not be as energetic. The lack of support from the board dampens the program’s credibility and increases the risk of nonconformity throughout the organization.

A fundamental component in creating a culture that values ethics and compliance is the support from the board and CEO. So, what can a can the CCO do to get the board on board?
