This report is a forecast of tourism activity in Canada, the provinces, and Yukon plus the outlook for domestic, United States, and key overseas markets such as Europe and Asia. Travel prices are examined, including costs of travel (air, rail, and car); accommodation; food and beverages; as well as recreation and entertainment. A companion publication, Travel Markets Outlook: Metropolitan Focus, forecasts tourism activity in nine Canadian cities.

Document Highlights

  • Domestic overnight travel is projected to increase by 3.2 per cent, with the value of the Canadian dollar working as a disincentive for Canadians to travel abroad.
  • Visits from the United States will continue to grow, increasing a further 5.3 per cent this year, thanks to a favourable exchange rate and gas prices, as well as national, provincial, and municipal marketing campaigns targeting U.S. travellers.
  • In total, overseas visits to Canada are expected to increase 8.4 per cent, with the strongest growth expected from Mexico (28.3 per cent).
  • Overnight visits to Quebec are forecast to expand 4.3 per cent this year, benefiting from new direct flights from Mexico and events around Montréal’s 375th anniversary.
  • The many festivals and events in communities across Ontario for the 150th anniversary of Confederation will help overnight visits to the province expand by 3.8 per cent.
  • Overnight travel to Manitoba is forecast to increase 3.1 per cent in 2017 thanks to the the hosting of the Canada Games and government funding for tourism development.
  • British Columbia will benefit from increased air capacity from overseas markets, as well as sporting events in the province. Overnight visits are estimated to expand 3.7 per cent this year.
  • Overnight visits to Yukon are estimated to increase 4.2 per cent this year, benefiting from the 75th anniversary of the Alaska Highway and a new marketing campaign targeted to U.S. travellers.
