The monthly Metropolitan Housing Starts publication provides the recent trends in housing starts for 28 metropolitan areas and expectations for starts over both the short and long term.

Document Highlights

  • There are 14 CMAs with positive expectations for both the short and long terms—two more than last month.
  • Total housing starts hit their highest level in more than nine years (September 2007) in Canada in March.
  • The CMAs with the biggest year-over-year declines in housing starts in March were Hamilton, Oshawa, Halifax, Kingston, and Victoria.
  • Greater Sudbury had the biggest year-over-year increase in housing starts last month.
