The learning landscape of Canadian organizations is changing. For nearly three decades, The Conference Board of Canada has been tracking trends in workplace learning and development in Canada. While formal methods still constitute the majority of organizational learning delivery today, research indicates that informal learning has become increasingly more prevalent in Canadian workplace environments, yet little research is available on the behaviors and practices comprising informal learning

Join The Conference Board of Canada’s Donna Burnett Vachon and Colin Hall along with Dr. Saul Carliner, Professor in the Department of Education at Concordia University, and author of several books on training and development including Informal Learning Basics (2012) as they dive deep into the results of the Conference Board’s research.

Webinar Highlights

This 60-minute webinar will explore recent findings from The Conference Board of Canada’s National Workplace Learning Survey including:

  • Highlighting the types of informal learning activities and practices employees at varying levels engage in.
  • Perceptions of the prevalence of informal learning in Canadian organizations from employees at varying levels and roles.
  • The level of support for informal learning from senior organizational leaders.
  • The relationship between workplace learning culture and the level of support and encouragement for informal learning.
  • Investigating whether the rise of informal learning is the result of shortcomings in learning programs or whether it is emerging as a key element of learning strategies for Canadian organizations.

Dr. Carliner will also provide valuable insights into the survey findings, leveraging his expertise and research on informal learning.

Saul CarlinerSaul Carliner is the author of Informal Learning Basics and a Professor of the Educational Communication and Technology at Concordia University in Montreal. Also an industry consultant, he has provided strategic advice and workshops to clients around the globe, including Alltel Wireless, Boston Scientific, Bronx Zoo, PwC, ST Microelectronics, Turkish Management Centre, and many US and Canadian government agencies. Carliner is a Fellow and past board member of the Institute for Performance and Learning (formerly Canadian Society for Training and Development), past Research Fellow of the Association for Talent Development, and Fellow and past international president of the Society for Technical Communication.
