Employee Time Off: A Look at Paid and Unpaid Leaves in Canada

Today’s workforce is made up of a diverse group of Canadians from multiple generations and life stages. With this in mind, employers are offering a range of paid and unpaid leaves to acknowledge the varied priorities of today’s workers. Many organizations are choosing to top-up parental leaves with additional time off or provide additional vacation and flex time in order to attract and retain talent.

The Conference Board of Canada has just released a new briefing, Out of Office: Paid and Unpaid Leaves in Canadian Organizations that benchmarks leave practices for vacation, holidays and office closures, family and parental leaves, as well as a variety of other legislated and non-legislated leaves—including new parent leave, eldercare leave, flex days, religious observance days, and many more.

Webinar Highlights

Report author Monica Haberl will review the key findings from her research and details best practices for leave policies among Canadian organizations. Monica will outline some top areas to watch in terms of employee leaves, and provide detail on:

  • Current organizational practices and offerings of paid and unpaid leaves
  • Vacation entitlements, recognition of past service when determining vacation entitlements, and vacation carryover and payout
  • Provision of flex or floater days, scheduled office closures, and other paid leaves
  • Base requirements and top-up practices for maternity, parental, and adoption leaves
  • Prevalence of a variety of other leaves, and the length of leave offerings

About Monica

Photo of Michael BurtMonica Haberl is a Research Associate and Network Manager with the Leadership and Human Resources Division of the Conference Board of Canada. She currently works with the Compensation Research Centre and the Council for Industrial Relations Executives. She has completed research in a variety of areas including compensation, industrial relations, corporate governance, talent management, leadership and engagement. Monica worked in the private sector before joining the Conference Board in 2015.
