2003 Recipient—Purdy Crawford
TORONTO, October 16, 2003 – Purdy Crawford will receive The Conference Board of Canada's 2003 Honorary Associate Award tonight for a lifetime of distinguished personal, professional, and community accomplishments.
"Purdy Crawford is being given the Honorary Associate Award, which is the Conference Board's highest honour. It is conferred annually upon an individual who has served both his organization and his country with distinction," said Anne Golden, President and CEO of the Conference Board. "He has been a role model and mentor to other lawyers, a champion for improving education and corporate governance, and a major supporter of charitable activities. We are delighted to honour him with this year's award."
Mr. Crawford, Counsel at Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP, sits on the boards of several large public companies in Canada and the United States, and is currently chairman of the board of Allstream (formerly AT&T Canada). He is a Governor of the University of Waterloo, Chancellor Emeritus of Mount Allison University (where he earned his B.A.), and Chairman Emeritus of the Atlantic Institute for Market Studies. Mr. Crawford is active in fundraising for several charities and has served in several positions related to improving corporate governance.
A native of Five Islands, Nova Scotia, Mr. Crawford pursued his legal career with Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP. He became Chief Executive Officer of Imasco Limited in 1985 and held the post for 10 years before retiring, but continued as non-executive Chairman until 2000. Mr. Crawford was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1996. His numerous awards include induction into both the Business Hall of Fame of Nova Scotia and the Canadian Business Hall of Fame. He was a Conference Board director from 1988 to 1994.
