Case Studies

We have developed a number of profiles of organizations that have excellent practices for hiring, integrating, and developing people with disabilities. Each profile focuses on a different aspect of employment, and illustrates practical ways by which organizations have interpreted and implemented components of Ontario’s new standards concerning employment of people with disabilities.

Accenture

Accenture is a leading global professional services company providing a broad range of services and solutions in strategy, consulting, digital technology, and operations to clients in over 120 countries. For Accenture, inclusion and diversity are not simply abstract concepts, but are embedded into every dimension of the organization.

Starwood Hotels and Resorts

As one of the world’s largest hoteliers, Starwood’s goal is to bring an authentic global experience to each guest. Starwood’s overarching recruitment strategy embeds an intentional commitment to diversity and inclusion.

SAP Canada

SAP Canada (SAP), headquartered in Toronto, is a market leader in enterprise application software that is used to manage business operations and customer relations. Through its Autism at  Work initiative, SAP is focused on hiring individuals from the autism spectrum, SAP’s goal is to have one per cent of its workforce be composed of individuals from the autism spectrum by 2020.

Out of this World Cafe & Catering

Located in downtown Toronto, Out of is World Cafe (OTW) is a small business operated through Working for Change, a social purpose enterprise that prepares individuals with mental illness and addiction issues for employment.

Enterprise Holdings, Inc.

By providing notice of accommodation at every stage of the selection process, candidates are aware of Enterprise's ability to accommodate their needs.

SIGNS

SIGNS is a novel, new restaurant whose front-line staff is Deaf or have significant hearing impairments. This profile focuses on recruitment and training processes to accommodate specific needs of the Deaf community.

The City of Ottawa

By taking a case-by-case approach to accommodation and return to work, the City has excellent practices in place to support managers and individuals as they engage in dialogue and work together to find the best solutions.

Delta Hotels

Delta has effectively integrated accessibility with its performance management process. It emphasizes learning and development and encourages regular discussions between team members and their managers throughout the year. This provides a natural opportunity and some structure to discuss accommodations when needed.


Interviews

Tips and Perspectives on Accessibility from People with Disabilities

Below are several short audio vignettes profiling individuals with disabilities who generously share their perspectives on inclusive work environments. Based on their experience they share tips on making workplaces more accessible and what it truly means to create a culture that is inclusive for people with disabilities. Their insights show that creating an accessible workplace is not necessarily complex or costly.

Pina D’Intino is a sought after accessibility consultant who actively promotes accessibility and inclusion from an organizational and grassroots perspective. Pina has acquired more than 28 years of experience in a large global financial institution and for the last 15 years has focused primarily on accessibility and inclusion.

Photo of David MacdonaldInterview with David Macdonald

David Macdonald is an 11-year veteran of the Canadian Army. He served in a combat role in Afghanistan from 2008–09. While in Afghanistan, he was physically wounded on a combat patrol in 2009. Although he has since recovered from his physical injury, he was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in 2013. Having overcome the challenges associated with this illness, David now dedicates his time to supporting fellow Veterans and First Responders with their PTSD and fighting the stigma surrounding mental illness.

Catherine Bell AICI CIP, is President of PRIME Impressions Image Consulting, author of Empower Your Presence, and a dynamic international trainer. A polio survivor, she is President of H’art Centre, a Director on March of Dimes Canada’s Board, the Vice-chair of the MODC’s Not-for-profit Housing Corporation and was their delegate to the United Nations Roundtable on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Catherine also teaches career strategies at St. Lawrence College, Kingston where she encounters people with disabilities struggling with how or whether to disclose their disabilities during the hiring process.

Lauri Sue Robertson is an expert resource on the accommodations needed by those who live with speech, visual, physical, intellectual, psychiatric, neurological and learning disabilities, as well as those living with chemical sensitivities, facial differences or hearing loss. She created the “May I Help You?” training program used by all provincial employees.
