This report is a forecast of tourism activity in Canada, the provinces, and Yukon plus the outlook for domestic, United States, and key overseas markets such as Europe and Asia. Travel prices are examined, including costs of travel (air, rail, and car); accommodation; food and beverages; as well as recreation and entertainment. A companion publication, Travel Markets Outlook: Metropolitan Focus, forecasts tourism activity in nine Canadian cities.

  • With strong economic growth in Canada and improving economic conditions in the United States, overnight visits to Canada showed solid gains in 2017, boosted by anniversary celebrations—the country’s 150th and Montréal’s 375th.
  • Overseas visits are expected to grow by 7.1 per cent this year with gains from Mexico, Asia, and Oceania while travel next year will be sparked by the Canada–China Year of Tourism.
  • Travel prices are affected by gas prices and those, plus the demand due to celebrations this year in Canada, caused travel prices to rise by 4.3 per cent in 2017, but they will moderate to between 2.2 and 2.4 per cent over the forecast horizon.
