Atlantic Business Outlook: New Brunswick

Thursday May 17 2018 Venue TBD Fredricton, New Brunswick

Overview

New Brunswick’s economic growth is expected to be the weakest in Canada over the next two years. The jobless rate is at a 40-year low, but it is falling due to a shrinking labour force as the provincial population ages. The provincial government is struggling on the revenue side and is facing increasing costs for health care and social assistance spending.

The prospects for the mining sector are favourable over the near term, but the forestry sector faces more difficulties due to the tariffs imposed by the U.S. on imports of softwood lumber.

As work begins on modernizing the Port of Saint John and refurbishing the Mactaquac Generating Station, real business investment will pick up starting in 2019.

Get the latest and most comprehensive economic analysis in the country to navigate this uncertain business climate. The Conference Board of Canada is pleased to present the third annual Atlantic Business Outlook Conference in New Brunswick.

Featuring the Conference Board’s Senior Vice-President and Chief Economist, Craig Alexander, the Atlantic Business Outlook includes global, national, provincial and metropolitan perspectives. The outlook will provide business leaders and policy makers from across New Brunswick with both a deep dive into the numbers and analysis of the factors underpinning the economy, including:

  • The demographic outlook and its impact on long-term economic growth.
  • The impact of the dollar on exports to the United States and industries such as tourism.
  • The implications of slow economic growth on provincial finances and capacity to fund public programs.

In addition to the Conference Board’s economic forecast for 2018 and beyond, attendees at the Atlantic Business Outlook will enjoy a lively panel discussion with some of leading business people in the province, along with a keynote address. This once-a-year Business Outlook promises to be the premier economic forecasting event in the province this year.
