Food Horizons Canada (FHC)

Food and drink impact Canadians in an extraordinary range of ways. They affect our lives, our health, our jobs, our economy, and our environment. Canadians want foods that are safe, nutritious, affordable, available to all, and produced in ways that are environmentally sustainable. There is renewed determination to safeguard and sustain the health and profitability of the food sector and to resolve pivotal issues, thereby ensuring the quality, healthfulness, safety, and sustainability of the food supply for Canadians and consumers abroad. The Conference Board of Canada launched Food Horizons Canada (FHC) in 2017 to address issues facing food in our country today and in the future.

The Centre is an evidence-based, independent source of advanced performance monitoring and reporting, advisory and research services, food strategy engagement, and communications outreach. It aims to:

  • raise public awareness of the nature and importance of the food sector in Canada’s economy and society;
  • to further knowledge and discourse on pivotal policy issues that are top of mind for stakeholders in the Canadian food sector;
  • address key food sector challenges that could benefit from future food scenario building, foresight studies, and food outlooks;
  • examine issues from a 1-to-20-year perspective. This will enable members to identify short-term actions in response to immediate challenges, while considering the long-term perspective needed to achieve a shared vision for the future of food;
  • conduct advanced research on new and emerging issues related to food, beverages, and the food sector to sustain the empirical basis for planning and action;
  • provide opportunities for dialogue and collaboration among food and non-food-related stakeholders to promote and facilitate change.

FHC is a forum for leaders from food-related industries and from businesses, governments, academic institutions, and foundations with an interest in working together to protect Canada’s food reputation, stimulate efforts to improve food quality and food systems, and grow Canada’s food sector here and abroad. FHC aims to increase understanding of issues, providing evidence-based, effective solutions to inform decision-making over the short, medium, and long terms.
